Year end

The New Year is upon us and it seems like I've been somewhat remiss in my blog updating responsibilities. I hope to remedy this situation in the coming months. Before we go down that particular path though, I thought I might continue my fledgling tradition from twelve months ago, and create a set of my favourite pics from the past year. So if you'll bear with me through some (more) narcissistic self-aggrandizing, we'll get started.

Initially, I was going to go through about twenty or so photos and do a comment for each one; explaining the what, where, when, why & how for all of them. But, quite frankly, I bored myself nearly to the point of falling asleep just writing the comments. If I'm having a hard time getting through writing them, then that doesn't bode well for how you guys are going to receive them.

So instead, I think I'll just link to a fistful of my favourite shots from 2011. A subset of a set if you will. There are more in the 'real' set which you can find on flickr, most of them don't suck. If you feel so inclined, I'd love to hear your comments (good or bad) on them. Here or on flickr, as you see fit. For now, take a gander at these:

These last two photos have some special significance for me. The second last photo was my attempt to do collage of photos from the start to the finish of my day. August nineteenth of 2011 was World Photography Day, and at that point in time I was hobbling around with my foot in a cast, and had a few more months of hobbling to look forward to.

Originally, I had made some bigger plans for the day but they got sidetracked when I broke my foot. Add to that a months' worth of frustration at being cooped up and unable to get out on the motorcycle or shooting with the camera and you start to get an idea of what kind of mood I was in. To be able to just shoot gibberish crap all day and have fun, even with a crappy little cell phone camera was a huge release for me. It's probably one of the worst photos (or series of photos) I took for the entire year, but it's easily the one that means the most to me. No contest.

The very last photo (just above) was my favourite shot of the entire year. It's from the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon festival. An event I had tried to shoot for two years and kept having bad luck with weather. The only launch of the festival took place while I was perched across the river camera in hand. It was a lot of fun.

2011 had it's ups and downs. The Japan quake, the Arab spring, some interesting and anxious political happenings both domestically and abroad. Personally, it was a year with quite a range of peaks and valleys. A year with a lot of change packed into it for only three hundred and sixty-five (and a quarter) days. I guess the only real measure is to compare where I am today to where I was a year ago. Personally, I think I've come out ahead on that comparison, and I like where my path seems to be leading. I'm excited to see what this new year brings my way. All the best to you and yours in the year ahead folks.
